Elemental Cinema: ‘Storm Over Asia’ (1928)

The fabulous final scene of Pudovkin’s 1929 epic masterpiece Storm Over Asia, which examines the clash between traditional life and modernisation in 20th Century Central Asia. Pudovkin organically combined fictional and documentary approaches when making this film, and offers a poetic and moving depiction of life on the Steppe. It is a stunning example of Russian montage, showing truly a brilliant, expressive use of the medium.
