Inspired by a celebrated story from 16th Century China, Stephen Chow’s Journey to the West (2014) follows a young Buddhist monk on an epic quest in search of sacred knowledge. Along the way he encounters a host of supernatural beings, from irksome demons to eccentric martial arts masters. Chow’s rendering of this ancient tale is highly entertaining. He expertly interweaves themes of adventure, fantasy, horror and romance, all brought to life through colourful characters and Chow’s signature, absurdist humour. This is an awesome, playful exploration of Chinese folklore and spirituality. Highly recommended.
