Elemental Cinema: ‘Storm Over Asia’ (1928)

This final sequence from Pudovkin’s 1929 masterpiece Storm Over Asia demonstrates how montage can be used to evoke powerful, new meanings by inter-cutting different imagery. In the sequence the raw, natural power of the Mongolian horse cavalry is expressed by inter-cutting with shots of the powerful nature of the Steppe. The film examines the clash between traditional life and modernity in 20th Century Central Asia, combining fictional and documentary approaches.
